Breathing exercise · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2

Beginner box breathing — 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 — for a hard week, after a long day

The pattern is 2 · 2 · 2 · 2, which is the easiest version of the square.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 2, hold for 2, out for 2, hold for 2. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. Use it at the end of a long day, not at the start of one. Let the physical world hold your attention.

Why it can help

It works because it is boring. Boring rhythms are the ones you can actually follow under pressure.

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 32 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in the minutes before an appointment you are dreading
  • when you are the only person awake in the house
  • when you cannot sleep and do not want to get up

Tips

  • Do the last round slightly smaller than the others. It makes stopping easier.
  • Keep your jaw loose. People clench it without noticing during holds.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
