Beginner box breath for a noisy room
2 · 2 · 2 · 2 breathing: the easiest version of the square.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in for 2, hold for 2, out for 2, hold for 2. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
You can do it silently, in a meeting, without anyone knowing. That matters more than it sounds.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 2s |
| Exhale | 2s | 4s |
| Hold again | 2s | 6s |
One round is 8 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 32 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- in the minutes before an appointment you are dreading
- when your thoughts are moving faster than you are
- when the day has been fine but you still feel braced
Tips
- Try the same pattern at a different time of day and see whether it feels different.
- It is fine to breathe through your mouth if your nose is blocked. Nose is usually easier.
- Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 5-7 breathing exercise for a hot day, 6-2-6-2 breathing: 12 rounds for a hot day or 3-5-7 breathing: 4 rounds for a night shift.
