Breathing exercise · 3 · 5 · 7
3-5-7 breathing for a reset, on a low-energy afternoon
A a staircase down: three, five, seven pattern, counted for you on screen.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
The ratio is 3 in, hold for 5, 7 out. Only the out-breath needs any attention. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. Stay with what you can actually feel.
Why it can help
The ratio matters more than the depth. Shallow but long beats deep and rushed.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Hold | 5s | 3s |
| Exhale | 7s | 8s |
One round is 15 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 120 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you are the only person awake in the house
- after a long drive, to shake off the alertness
- when you notice your shoulders are up near your ears
Tips
- If you lose count, start the round again rather than guessing.
- A shorter pattern done consistently beats a longer one done once.
- A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 4-6 breathing — 4 · 6 — for bedtime, when you want to be left alone, Beginner box breathing: 12 rounds for being unwell, when you have been meaning to start or How to use Double-inhale sigh for creative work, if you are fitting this around other people.
