Gentle box breathing exercise for a hospital waiting room — on a low-energy afternoon

A 3 · 3 · 3 · 3 rhythm — a smaller square, for when four counts feels long.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Count to 3 on the way in, 3 at the top, 3 on the way out, 3 at the bottom. Repeat. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

Equal counts give your attention one simple job: keep the four sides the same length. That predictability is most of the effect.

The pattern, in seconds

One round is 12 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 48 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you notice your shoulders are up near your ears
  • after a long drive, to shake off the alertness
  • in the car, parked, before you go inside

Tips

  • Do not chase the feeling. If nothing happens, nothing happened.
  • The counts are a guide. If a number feels too long, shorten every side by one.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
