Breathing exercise · 3 · 5 · 7

3-5-7 breathing — 3 · 5 · 7 — for deep focus, when the house is busy

Rounds of 3 · 5 · 7, with the counting done for you.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 3, hold for 5, out for 7. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. It works with other people in the house. You do not need silence. Start with what's physical. Everything else can wait.

Why it can help

If you are feeling revved up, this is one of the fastest honest ways to take the edge off without pretending.

One round is 15 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 90 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • at the start of a study session, to set the tone
  • in a hospital corridor, waiting for news
  • as a way to mark the end of the working day

Tips

  • Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
  • If you lose count, start the round again rather than guessing.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
