Breathing exercise · 2 · 1 · 4

2-1-4 breathing exercise for a lonely evening — when you need to stop thinking about work

The pattern is 2 · 1 · 4, which is short in, short hold, long out — the smallest useful dose.

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 2, hold for 1, out for 4. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. Work thoughts are allowed to be there. They just do not get to drive. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

You are not emptying your lungs, just taking longer to do it. The extra seconds are where the effect lives.

One round is 7 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 56 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • as a way to mark the end of the working day
  • when someone has annoyed you and you need to not react
  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be

Tips

  • Practising when you are calm makes it available when you are not.
  • Try it lying down with your knees bent if sitting upright feels like effort.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
