How to use Soft 4-7-8 breathing for Monday morning, when you need to stop thinking about work

Rounds of 4 · 4 · 8, with the counting done for you.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4. Then out for 8, slowly, without pushing. Work thoughts are allowed to be there. They just do not get to drive. Start with what's physical. Everything else can wait.

Why it can help

The long exhale is the working part. A slow out-breath is one of the few direct levers you have on your own arousal level.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 160 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • just before you have to say something difficult
  • after an argument, before you decide what to say next
  • when your hands are cold and your chest is tight

Tips

  • There is no need to breathe deeply. Long and quiet is the aim.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor. It helps more than it sounds like it should.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
