Breathing exercise · 2 · 1 · 4
2-1-4 breathing exercise for a big decision — on a day that started badly
Rounds of 2 · 1 · 4, with the counting done for you.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
The ratio is 2 in, hold for 1, 4 out. Only the out-breath needs any attention. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
You can keep the in-breath completely ordinary. Only the out-breath needs to be longer.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 1s | 2s |
| Exhale | 4s | 3s |
One round is 7 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 84 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- while you are waiting for something to start
- when you cannot sleep and do not want to get up
- when you are the only person awake in the house
Tips
- It is fine to breathe through your mouth if your nose is blocked. Nose is usually easier.
- Notice which part of the breath feels tight, and reduce that count first.
- Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try Uneven box breathing exercise for a work break — if you have five quiet minutes, 3-6 breathing for a stolen moment of caregiving, if you have done this a hundred times or Beginner box breathing exercise for a break at work — when nothing else has worked today.
