2-1-4 breathing: 6 rounds for a big decision, when you want something simple

Rounds of 2 · 1 · 4, with the counting done for you.

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 2, hold for 1, out for 4. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. Stay with what you can actually feel.

Why it can help

Long exhales give the diaphragm a slow, full range of movement, which is why the shoulders often drop on their own.

One round is 7 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 42 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you are the only person awake in the house
  • after a long drive, to shake off the alertness
  • when the day has been fine but you still feel braced

Tips

  • Sit upright. Your lungs work better when you are not folded in half.
  • Try the same pattern at a different time of day and see whether it feels different.
  • A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
