Breathing exercise · 3 · 6
3-6 breathing — 3 · 6 — for anxious moments, when you want something simple
The pattern is 3 · 6, which is a gentle two-to-one ratio.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
In for 3, out for 6. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.
Why it can help
A long, unforced exhale tends to slow the heart a little. You may notice it in your chest before anywhere else.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Exhale | 6s | 3s |
One round is 9 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 36 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- before you walk into a room full of people
- before a presentation, in the corridor
- when the weather has been grey for a week
Tips
- Stop after a few rounds if you feel dizzy, and breathe normally for a minute.
- Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
- Because there is no pause, you can keep this going while walking or talking.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
