About this practice

For the times when you are at your limit when the afternoon slump takes up more room than you would like — 7 minutes, grounding. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: the afternoon slump

The post-lunch dip is a normal circadian low, not a failure of willpower. Core temperature and alertness both dip in the early afternoon.

It tends to show up as:

  • Heavy, foggy middle of the day
  • Struggling to stay with anything
  • Reaching for sugar or caffeine

The dip is temporary. A short practice gets you through the low without adding stimulants on top of it.

Doing this when you are overwhelmed

  • Do not decide priorities during it
  • Pick the shortest session available here
  • When you finish, write down the first physical action on paper

The pile looks less like a pile once the alarm stops ringing. Sort it after, not during.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions.
  2. 0:16If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  3. 0:31We're going to move through the body in order, roughly from top to bottom.
  4. 0:45Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
  5. 1:03Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  6. 1:16Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  7. 1:27Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
  8. 1:39Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
  9. 1:51Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  10. 2:03When the 3pm dip arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  11. 2:21If the post-lunch fog shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  12. 2:40Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
  13. 2:52Stay here a little longer.
  14. 3:01Let your breathing be boring. Boring is good here.
  15. 3:12If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  16. 3:25Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  17. 3:37Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
  18. 3:53If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
  19. 4:08Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  20. 4:22A short silence. Let it be empty.
  21. 4:32This is not the last time the heavy middle of the day will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
  22. 4:51Notice how the 3pm dip changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  23. 5:07Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
  24. 5:20Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
  25. 5:32If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
  26. 5:46No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  27. 5:57The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
  28. 6:11Let the pace of the last few minutes set the pace of the next few.
  29. 6:25Let your breathing be completely ordinary again.
  30. 6:35Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
