About this practice

For the times when you wake at 3am when self-doubt takes up more room than you would like — 3 minutes, softening. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this at 3am

  • Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
  • Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
  • Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour

Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks.
  2. 0:15Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
  3. 0:29Notice the pause at the end of each breath. It's short, but it's there.
  4. 0:43Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  5. 0:57Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
  6. 1:11Feel the parts of you that have gone quiet.
  7. 1:22If the fear that you are not enough starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
  8. 1:40the small voice saying you cannot may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  9. 1:58Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  10. 2:12If the question mark over your ability shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  11. 2:33If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  12. 2:46Find the tightest place and simply breathe near it. Warmth does the softening, not effort.
  13. 3:00When you stand up, do it slowly. There's no reason to hurry.
