About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for heartbreak. A grounding session you can do before an interview. A guided session of about 20 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: heartbreak

A breakup activates the same attachment system as physical separation. That is why it hurts in the chest and why the missing comes in surges.

It tends to show up as:

  • Physical ache in the chest or throat
  • Checking for messages you do not want
  • Extreme tiredness in the first weeks

The surges pass. Having something steady to return to between them makes the first weeks less brutal.

Doing this before an interview

  • Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
  • Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
  • Keep it short — there is no time for a long session

Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Take a moment to notice the room behind you, without turning around.
  2. 0:13Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  3. 0:23Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
  4. 0:36This is not a performance. Nobody is listening to how well you're doing it.
  5. 0:50Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  6. 1:04Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  7. 1:18Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
  8. 1:30Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
  9. 1:43Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  10. 1:54Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  11. 2:06Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  12. 2:18This is not the last time the missing of someone will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
  13. 2:37Each time your mind hands you the raw first weeks of a breakup, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  14. 2:57Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  15. 3:10You are allowed to be unimpressed by the bruise where a relationship used to be. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  16. 3:27You do not have to solve the missing of someone in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
  17. 3:46Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
  18. 3:59If you're distracted by a sound, let the sound be the object for a moment.
  19. 4:13There's no need to try harder than this.
  20. 4:24I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  21. 4:37Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  22. 4:49We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  23. 5:03A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  24. 5:14Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
  25. 5:26If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
  26. 5:39I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  27. 5:51If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
  28. 6:05Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  29. 6:16Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  30. 6:26Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  31. 6:38Small efforts are the whole method.
  32. 6:48A short silence. Let it be empty.
  33. 6:58If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  34. 7:10You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  35. 7:23A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
  36. 7:34You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
  37. 7:46Nothing changes for a moment.
  38. 7:55Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
  39. 8:09Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
  40. 8:19I'll step back. You stay here.
  41. 8:29If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
  42. 8:42Remain here for a few more breaths.
  43. 8:52Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
  44. 9:05Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
  45. 9:17Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  46. 9:28Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  47. 9:39Let the quiet do its work.
  48. 9:49Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
  49. 10:03Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  50. 10:15Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
  51. 10:28Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  52. 10:42Just the breath, still.
  53. 10:51If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  54. 11:04Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  55. 11:15Feel your face. It's probably softer than it was five minutes ago.
  56. 11:28Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
  57. 11:39No need to open your eyes yet.
  58. 11:49Feel the parts of you that have gone quiet.
  59. 12:00Let your breathing be boring. Boring is good here.
  60. 12:11Let it be this simple.
  61. 12:20Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
  62. 12:34Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
  63. 12:48A few seconds more.
  64. 12:57Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
  65. 13:10Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  66. 13:25Take the next breath slowly.
  67. 13:34Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  68. 13:46Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
  69. 13:58Stay here a little longer.
  70. 14:07Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  71. 14:17Notice that you don't have to start a breath. It arrives by itself.
  72. 14:30Keep following the air.
  73. 14:39Notice the weight of your thighs, all the way down.
  74. 14:51Nothing about the raw first weeks of a breakup has to be explained or justified in this room.
  75. 15:07Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
  76. 15:18Imagine softening the edges of the bruise where a relationship used to be. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
  77. 15:37Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  78. 15:49When the missing of someone presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
  79. 16:08You do not have to win against the raw first weeks of a breakup. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
  80. 16:27Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
  81. 16:39If you catch yourself fighting the bruise where a relationship used to be, that is worth noticing. The fight usually costs more than the feeling.
  82. 16:58Notice how the missing of someone changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  83. 17:14Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  84. 17:28If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
  85. 17:42If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
  86. 17:57Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  87. 18:10A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  88. 18:21We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  89. 18:31Let your body keep settling.
  90. 18:40Let your eyes open when they're ready, not when the words end.
  91. 18:53Roll your neck once, slowly, in whichever direction feels good.
  92. 19:05Stay with it.
