About this practice
A 7-minute softening session for morning energy, when it all piles up. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: morning energy
Morning energy depends on how you come out of sleep and when light hits your eyes, more than on the number of hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Heavy eyelids at the start
- Struggling out of bed
- Needing to hit snooze repeatedly
Movement and breathing raise alertness without caffeine, and the effect holds better through the early hours.
Doing this when you are overwhelmed
- Do not decide priorities during it
- Pick the shortest session available here
- When you finish, write down the first physical action on paper
The pile looks less like a pile once the alarm stops ringing. Sort it after, not during.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is.
- 0:14Let this be easy, if easy is available.
- 0:25Let your sense of the room shrink down to just your body and the surface you're on.
- 0:40Let the breath get a little quieter, as if you were trying not to wake someone sleeping nearby.
- 0:56Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 1:09Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
- 1:20Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
- 1:31Now the right shoulder. Let it be a centimetre lower than it was.
- 1:44Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
- 1:57Imagine softening the edges of the day arriving before you are ready. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
- 2:16There is no correct amount of the wish to begin without the scramble to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
- 2:35Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
- 2:48Let the pause stretch out.
- 2:57Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
- 3:09Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
- 3:21If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
- 3:35Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 3:46Small efforts are the whole method.
- 3:56Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
- 4:10Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
- 4:23A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 4:34Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 4:51Feel the weight of the day arriving before you are ready somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
- 5:09Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
- 5:25Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
- 5:37If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
- 5:52Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 6:04There's no need to try harder than this.
- 6:15Let your breathing go back to whatever it does when nobody is watching.
- 6:28Stand up when you're ready. The list hasn't grown while you were here.
