About this practice
A 3-minute softening session for better sleep, at the weekend. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: better sleep
Sleep quality depends on how quickly you descend and how little you surface, not just on total hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Waking unrefreshed after enough hours
- Broken sleep
- Taking a long time to drop off
A slower landing shortens the descent and reduces the early-night surface events. Twenty minutes spent well is not a cost to your sleep.
Doing this at the weekend
- Do it without a schedule to justify it
- Later in the morning, in better light, usually works well
- Let the length be open-ended if the time allows
Recovery is not something you have to earn first, and treating it as a reward keeps it conditional.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Check your hands. Are they doing anything? Let them stop.
- 0:12Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
- 0:26Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
- 0:39Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
- 0:53Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
- 1:07Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
- 1:18Whatever the wish for deeper rest is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 1:33There is no correct amount of the sleep that does not arrive easily to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
- 1:52Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
- 2:05If the worn-out mornings has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 2:22If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
- 2:35With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
- 2:50If you drifted off, that was rest, and rest counts.
