About this practice

3 minutes to meet better sleep with less of a fight. A noting practice, in the hour before sleep. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: better sleep

Sleep quality depends on how quickly you descend and how little you surface, not just on total hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Waking unrefreshed after enough hours
  • Broken sleep
  • Taking a long time to drop off

A slower landing shortens the descent and reduces the early-night surface events. Twenty minutes spent well is not a cost to your sleep.

Doing this before bed

  • Do it in bed or somewhere you can move straight to bed after
  • Lower the light, and do not check anything afterwards
  • If you fall asleep before the end, it worked

Falling asleep mid-session is a success, not a failure to complete it.

How noting works

Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.

  • Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
  • Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
  • Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Turn your phone face down if it's within reach. If it's in another room, even better.
  2. 0:15We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  3. 0:25Nothing here is a test of concentration. Drifting off is part of it.
  4. 0:38Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  5. 0:52If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
  6. 1:06Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
  7. 1:18When the worn-out mornings presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
  8. 1:37Let the exhale carry a little of the wish for deeper rest with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  9. 1:56Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
  10. 2:07If the sleep that does not arrive easily starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
  11. 2:25If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
  12. 2:40Small efforts are the whole method.
  13. 2:50If you're going straight back to work, take ten seconds at the doorway first.
