About this practice
Use this before bed when the house is quiet and you want a calm mind. A guided session of about 9 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Sit where you can keep your feet flat on the floor, spine upright but relaxed.
- 0:24Close your eyes gently and let your shoulders drop about an inch, releasing the weight of the day.
- 0:46Take a slow breath in through the nose, feeling the air fill the space behind your ribs. Hold it for a moment.
- 1:10Exhale to a soft sigh, as if you were letting a kettle release a puff of steam.
- 1:32Now bring a simple word to mind, something like peace or calm, and let it rest on the tip of your tongue.
- 1:56Repeat the word silently, matching its rhythm to each breath you take.
- 2:18If a thought appears, notice it like a leaf landing on a wet sidewalk, then let it slide away.
- 2:42Return to the word without judging the interruption, as you would return to a favorite song after a brief pause.
- 3:04Feel the surface of the chair under you, the texture of the fabric against your skin.
- 3:28Listen to the faint hum of the refrigerator in the next room, let it become part of the background.
- 3:50Notice the temperature of the air on your skin, perhaps a cool draft slipping in from the window.
- 4:14Allow the mantra to settle, each repetition a small stone placed on a porch step.
- 4:36When the mind wanders, simply point it back to the word, like you would point a flashlight at a wall.
- 5:00Keep the pace steady, not too fast, not too slow, like the ticking of a kitchen timer.
- 5:22Let any tension in your jaw loosen, as if you had just taken a bite of a soft apple.
- 5:46Observe your chest rise and fall, a gentle motion like a bathtub filling slowly.
- 6:08Should a car pass outside, note the sound and let it drift away like a distant echo.
- 6:32Continue with the word for a few more breaths, each one a quiet sip of tea.
- 6:54Stay with your awareness, hearing the room, feeling the floor supporting you.
- 7:18As the mantra fades, picture the last sip of tea leaving the cup, smooth and complete.
- 7:40Gently wiggle your fingers, feeling the movement in each joint as you come back.
- 8:04Open your eyes slowly, as if lifting a curtain to let the evening light in.
- 8:26Pause and notice how your mind feels now, without labeling it good or bad.
- 8:50Carry this quiet with you as you move into the rest of your night.
