About this practice
For the times in the middle of the night when deep work takes up more room than you would like — 7 minutes, body scan. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: deep work
Deep work requires a low distraction floor. Modern work rarely provides one, so the transition into it has to be manufactured.
It tends to show up as:
- Getting interrupted every few minutes
- Starting five things and finishing none
- Feeling busy but not productive
A short deliberate transition tells the body the next stretch is different. Without one, the previous meeting follows you in.
Doing this at 3am
- Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
- Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
- Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour
Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.
How body scan works
A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.
- Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
- Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
- Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead.
- 0:16We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 0:30Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
- 0:43Settle into the fact that for the next few minutes, nothing is required of you.
- 0:57Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
- 1:10Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 1:23Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
- 1:35Feel your calves, front and back.
- 1:45Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
- 1:58Think of the task that needs a clear head as a guest that arrived without knocking. You can let it stand in the hallway.
- 2:17Imagine softening the edges of the open tabs of your attention. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
- 2:35Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
- 2:47Let this one be unhurried.
- 2:56Notice that you don't have to start a breath. It arrives by itself.
- 3:09If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
- 3:22Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
- 3:34We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
- 3:44If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
- 3:58Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
- 4:11A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
- 4:22Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the pull of notifications is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
- 4:41the task that needs a clear head may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
- 5:00Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
- 5:14If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
- 5:28If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
- 5:43I'll step back. You stay here.
- 5:53You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 6:06Wiggle your fingers and toes, gently, like you're testing that they still work.
- 6:19Notice the quiet you made, and let it close gently.
- 6:31Keep following the air.
