About this practice
3 minutes to meet self-doubt with less of a fight. A body scan practice, ahead of a full day. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: self-doubt
Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.
It tends to show up as:
- Questioning your ability before starting
- Assuming you are the least capable in the room
- Hesitating to state an opinion
Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.
Doing this before a busy day
- Do it before the first message or notification
- Aim for steadiness rather than energy
- Decide the first task afterwards, not during
The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.
How body scan works
A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.
- Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
- Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
- Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions.
- 0:16Visit each area with plain curiosity, not with a verdict. Sensation is information, not a problem.
- 0:31Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
- 0:49Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
- 1:02Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
- 1:15Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
- 1:27When the fear that you are not enough arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
- 1:47If the small voice saying you cannot starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
- 2:04Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
- 2:17You are allowed to be unimpressed by the question mark over your ability. Indifference is a legitimate response.
- 2:33If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
- 2:46If a region feels numb, that is a finding too. Note it and move on.
- 3:00Notice the room again: the sounds, the temperature, the light.
