About this practice

A 10-minute self-compassion session for burnout, before bed. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 10 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: burnout

Burnout is not tiredness you can sleep off. It is a flat, depleted state after prolonged effort, where the usual rewards stop registering.

It tends to show up as:

  • Flatness rather than sadness
  • Cynicism about work you used to care about
  • Rest that does not restore anything

Recovery is not a push. Gentle practices that ask nothing of you are more useful here than anything with a target.

Doing this before bed

  • Do it in bed or somewhere you can move straight to bed after
  • Lower the light, and do not check anything afterwards
  • If you fall asleep before the end, it worked

Falling asleep mid-session is a success, not a failure to complete it.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00If you're lying down, let the mattress hold all of you. You can stop holding yourself up.
  2. 0:15Whatever you are about to say to yourself, imagine saying it to someone you love. Use those words.
  3. 0:31Let your sense of the room shrink down to just your body and the surface you're on.
  4. 0:46We'll be quiet for a bit longer than usual. Stay with whatever shows up.
  5. 1:00Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  6. 1:14Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  7. 1:27Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
  8. 1:40Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  9. 1:52Notice the small movement in your belly when you breathe.
  10. 2:04Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  11. 2:14You do not have to solve the flatness after pushing too long in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
  12. 2:34the worn-down feeling that coffee cannot fix may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  13. 2:53Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
  14. 3:04You are allowed to have a hard time without earning it first.
  15. 3:17A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  16. 3:28If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  17. 3:41Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
  18. 3:57Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  19. 4:09Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  20. 4:22The question is not what you deserve. It is what you need, right now, in this moment.
  21. 4:37I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  22. 4:49Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  23. 5:02Let this one be unhurried.
  24. 5:11Notice your ears, which mostly just receive things.
  25. 5:22Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  26. 5:33Remain here for a few more breaths.
  27. 5:43Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
  28. 5:53Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  29. 6:07Keep following the air.
  30. 6:16Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  31. 6:28Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  32. 6:43Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  33. 6:54You have been carrying the distance between you and the work you used to love for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  34. 7:17Picture the flatness after pushing too long as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  35. 7:36Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
  36. 7:49Imagine softening the edges of the worn-down feeling that coffee cannot fix. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
  37. 8:08If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
  38. 8:21Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  39. 8:34A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  40. 8:45Say it once, plainly: this is hard, and I am allowed to find it hard.
  41. 8:59No rush to move on.
  42. 9:08Come back to your body first, and the rest of the day second.
  43. 9:21Before you move, notice one thing that's fine right now.
