About this practice

7 minutes to meet guilt with less of a fight. A self-compassion practice, in the hour before sleep. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: guilt

Guilt replays past choices to try to change them. The replay cannot alter the outcome, so the relief never arrives.

It tends to show up as:

  • Replaying decisions you cannot undo
  • Apologising for things long since settled
  • Feeling you owe something unnamed

This is not a practice for absolution. It is a place to put the weight down for a few minutes, which makes it easier to carry after.

Doing this before bed

  • Do it in bed or somewhere you can move straight to bed after
  • Lower the light, and do not check anything afterwards
  • If you fall asleep before the end, it worked

Falling asleep mid-session is a success, not a failure to complete it.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Let the first out-breath be longer than the in-breath. Nothing dramatic, just longer.
  2. 0:13Whatever you are about to say to yourself, imagine saying it to someone you love. Use those words.
  3. 0:29Bring your attention to where your body meets the surface underneath you.
  4. 0:42Let your attention settle on the space between your nose and your upper lip, where the air passes.
  5. 0:58Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  6. 1:12Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  7. 1:23Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
  8. 1:35Notice the weight of your thighs, all the way down.
  9. 1:47Notice your shins, which take small knocks all day and never complain.
  10. 2:00There is no correct amount of the weight of what you should have done to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
  11. 2:19the replay of past choices may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  12. 2:37Notice your jaw again. Let your back teeth part slightly.
  13. 2:49Stay here a little longer.
  14. 2:58Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  15. 3:11If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
  16. 3:24Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  17. 3:35You are allowed to have a hard time without earning it first.
  18. 3:48If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
  19. 4:02Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  20. 4:17Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  21. 4:29Feel the weight of the self-blame that lingers somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  22. 4:45If the weight of what you should have done has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
  23. 5:04Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  24. 5:17Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
  25. 5:31Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
  26. 5:43I'll step back. You stay here.
  27. 5:53The question is not what you deserve. It is what you need, right now, in this moment.
  28. 6:08Wiggle your fingers and toes, gently, like you're testing that they still work.
  29. 6:21Notice if anything has loosened. Even slightly counts.
  30. 6:32Stay with it.
