About this practice

For the times on a lunch break when self-doubt takes up more room than you would like — 5 minutes, body scan. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this at lunch

  • Do it before eating rather than after, so you are not working against digestion
  • Leaving the desk matters more than the session length
  • Take the headphones off afterwards so the break registers

A break that happens at the same desk is only half a break.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Notice the heaviest part of your body right now. Let it be heavy.
  2. 0:13Move at the speed of your attention, not the speed of a checklist. There is no schedule to keep.
  3. 0:29Let your breathing find its own pace. We're only going to watch it.
  4. 0:42Let your body feel heavier than it did a minute ago. Let the chair or the floor take it.
  5. 0:58Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  6. 1:09Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
  7. 1:20Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
  8. 1:32Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
  9. 1:44Feel your calves, front and back.
  10. 1:54Stay with it.
  11. 2:02Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  12. 2:13Visit each area with plain curiosity, not with a verdict. Sensation is information, not a problem.
  13. 2:28If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
  14. 2:42Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the question mark over your ability is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  15. 3:01Picture the fear that you are not enough as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  16. 3:20Notice where you feel the breath most clearly. Nose, chest, or belly — pick one and stay there.
  17. 3:36Notice how the small voice saying you cannot changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  18. 3:53Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
  19. 4:05No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  20. 4:16We will travel down through the body, one region at a time, and leave each one softer than we found it.
  21. 4:33When you're ready, look around properly.
