About this practice

A 3-minute self-compassion session for self-doubt, before a hard conversation. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this before a hard conversation

  • Do it before, not during, and again after if it went badly
  • Decide your one non-negotiable sentence beforehand
  • Plan to let the other person speak first

Being settled makes it easier to listen rather than to defend. That is usually what the conversation needs.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Let your belly be soft. Not sucked in. Just soft.
  2. 0:12Put a hand where the feeling is strongest. Warmth and pressure are the oldest kind of reassurance.
  3. 0:27Notice the weight of your arms without moving them.
  4. 0:38Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  5. 0:50Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
  6. 1:04Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
  7. 1:14If you catch yourself fighting the question mark over your ability, that is worth noticing. The fight usually costs more than the feeling.
  8. 1:32Whatever the fear that you are not enough is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
  9. 1:48Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  10. 2:03Let the exhale carry a little of the small voice saying you cannot with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  11. 2:23If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
  12. 2:36Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
  13. 2:52Take a moment to notice you did this for yourself. That's not nothing.
