About this practice

For the times after work when self-criticism takes up more room than you would like — 3 minutes, softening. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-criticism

Self-criticism is a habit of speech, not an accurate report. The same inner voice repeats whether or not the evidence supports it.

It tends to show up as:

  • A running commentary on your mistakes
  • Harsh words you would never say aloud to someone else
  • Reviewing old failures in detail

The practice is not to argue with the voice, but to speak to yourself in a tone that does not require an argument.

Doing this after work

  • Change something physical first — shoes off, coat off — so the transition registers
  • Do it before picking up the evening tasks
  • Aim to end it fully, not just stop

Without a marker, work follows you into the evening. The session is the marker.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Put a hand on your chest for a moment if that feels steadying. Or don't. Both are allowed.
  2. 0:16If a place will not soften, leave it alone and go somewhere that will. It often follows.
  3. 0:31We'll work through this slowly. If you lose the thread, the thread will wait.
  4. 0:45If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
  5. 0:59Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
  6. 1:12Notice your pelvis resting on the surface below you.
  7. 1:23If the record of your mistakes shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  8. 1:43There is no correct amount of the harsh voice inside to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
  9. 2:01Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  10. 2:14Picture the criticism you would never aim at a friend as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  11. 2:34Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
  12. 2:45Find the tightest place and simply breathe near it. Warmth does the softening, not effort.
  13. 2:59Notice if anything has loosened. Even slightly counts.
