About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 15 minutes of body scan for burnout, on the way in. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: burnout
Burnout is not tiredness you can sleep off. It is a flat, depleted state after prolonged effort, where the usual rewards stop registering.
It tends to show up as:
- Flatness rather than sadness
- Cynicism about work you used to care about
- Rest that does not restore anything
Recovery is not a push. Gentle practices that ask nothing of you are more useful here than anything with a target.
Doing this on your commute
- Headphones on, eyes open or closed depending on your comfort
- Keep one part of your attention on your stop
- Do it standing if sitting is not possible — nobody is watching
Commuting time is already dead time. Nothing is being given up.
How body scan works
A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.
- Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
- Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
- Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened.
- 0:13Visit each area with plain curiosity, not with a verdict. Sensation is information, not a problem.
- 0:28Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
- 0:46This is not a performance. Nobody is listening to how well you're doing it.
- 1:00Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
- 1:12Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
- 1:23Notice your shins, which take small knocks all day and never complain.
- 1:36Notice your jaw again. Let your back teeth part slightly.
- 1:48Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 2:02Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
- 2:13Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
- 2:26Give the flatness after pushing too long a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
- 2:44You do not have to win against the worn-down feeling that coffee cannot fix. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
- 3:03Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
- 3:16Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the distance between you and the work you used to love is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
- 3:38Notice how the flatness after pushing too long changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
- 3:55Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
- 4:06Let the quiet do its work.
- 4:16Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
- 4:30Let your whole body be as heavy as it wants to be.
- 4:43Let this one be unhurried.
- 4:52Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 5:03Notice your breathing, without changing it.
- 5:13Let the pause stretch out.
- 5:22Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
- 5:34Notice your elbows. Odd things to have, but there they are.
- 5:46Stay here a little longer.
- 5:55Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
- 6:09Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
- 6:21I'll step back. You stay here.
- 6:31Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
- 6:45Remain here for a few more breaths.
- 6:55No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
- 7:06Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
- 7:18Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
- 7:31Nothing changes for a moment.
- 7:40If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
- 7:54I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
- 8:07Your only job is to notice what is there, region by region, without fixing anything.
- 8:21Notice if you've been frowning at your own thoughts.
- 8:32A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 8:43Move at the speed of your attention, not the speed of a checklist. There is no schedule to keep.
- 8:59Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
- 9:12I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
- 9:24If a region feels numb, that is a finding too. Note it and move on.
- 9:38Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
- 9:52Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 10:03We will travel down through the body, one region at a time, and leave each one softer than we found it.
- 10:20If you're distracted by a sound, let the sound be the object for a moment.
- 10:34Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 10:47A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
- 10:58If the worn-down feeling that coffee cannot fix shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
- 11:19You do not have to solve the distance between you and the work you used to love in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
- 11:41Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
- 11:55the flatness after pushing too long may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
- 12:13Notice where the worn-down feeling that coffee cannot fix lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 12:32Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
- 12:43If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
- 12:56Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
- 13:08If you're irritated, that's allowed. Irritation is just weather.
- 13:19Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
- 13:30Start at the crown of the head and move down slowly. Do not skip to the parts that hurt.
- 13:46Keep following the air.
- 13:55Stand up when you're ready. The list hasn't grown while you were here.
- 14:08Notice your feet on the floor. That's where you start from.
- 14:20Let it be this simple.
