About this practice
When morning energy shows up in a waiting room, this 3-minute letting go session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: morning energy
Morning energy depends on how you come out of sleep and when light hits your eyes, more than on the number of hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Heavy eyelids at the start
- Struggling out of bed
- Needing to hit snooze repeatedly
Movement and breathing raise alertness without caffeine, and the effect holds better through the early hours.
Doing this in a waiting room
- You can do this with your eyes open and your hands where they are
- Nothing here needs to look like a meditation
- Aim for steadiness rather than calm
Waiting feeds the dread it is meant to relieve. Having something specific to do with the time is the useful part.
How letting go works
Letting go is about loosening grip rather than dropping things. It works on the effort attached to a problem — the holding, rehearsing and bracing — which is separable from the problem itself.
- Pick one thing you are gripping and loosen a single finger
- Release the effort with the exhale, not the issue
- Set down temporarily; you can pick it up again after
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Notice the temperature of the air on the backs of your hands.
- 0:13Setting something down is not the same as giving up. You can pick it up again after.
- 0:28Let your body be exactly as tired as it is.
- 0:40Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
- 0:54Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
- 1:05Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
- 1:15There is no correct amount of the heavy eyelids at the start to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
- 1:34Think of the day arriving before you are ready as a guest that arrived without knocking. You can let it stand in the hallway.
- 1:53Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
- 2:07You do not have to win against the wish to begin without the scramble. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
- 2:26Notice if you're waiting for something to happen. Nothing is scheduled.
- 2:38Pick one thing you are gripping — a plan, a worry, a grudge — and loosen a single finger.
- 2:54Start to notice the edges of your body again, and the surface you're on.
