About this practice

For the times after a long day when financial stress takes up more room than you would like — 3 minutes, body scan. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this after a long day

  • Something physical first — shoes off, hands washed, water drunk
  • Do not review the day during it
  • Keep it short rather than thorough

Replaying the day in the practice just carries the day further into the evening.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Check your hands. Are they doing anything? Let them stop.
  2. 0:12We will travel down through the body, one region at a time, and leave each one softer than we found it.
  3. 0:29Bring your attention to where your body meets the surface underneath you.
  4. 0:42Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
  5. 0:56Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  6. 1:10Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  7. 1:22You are allowed to be unimpressed by the fear about money in the night. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  8. 1:38Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the arithmetic that will not balance is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  9. 1:57Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
  10. 2:13Whatever the worry that follows the bills is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
  11. 2:29Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  12. 2:43Move at the speed of your attention, not the speed of a checklist. There is no schedule to keep.
  13. 2:59Start to notice the edges of your body again, and the surface you're on.
