About this practice
For the times when you wake at 3am when tight shoulders and neck takes up more room than you would like — 5 minutes, noting. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: tight shoulders and neck
Shoulders rise towards the ears under sustained stress, and the muscles of the upper back shorten to hold that posture. The result is a stiff neck and a heavy upper back.
It tends to show up as:
- Shoulders up around the ears
- Stiff neck, especially after screens
- Headaches that start at the back of the head
Weight and gravity do the release. Noticing the contact points lets the shoulders stop holding themselves up.
Doing this at 3am
- Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
- Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
- Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour
Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened.
- 0:13We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 0:27Feel the small movements your body makes to keep you upright. They're happening without you.
- 0:41We'll start broad and narrow down. Nothing sudden is coming.
- 0:53Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
- 1:07Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
- 1:21Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
- 1:33Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
- 1:43Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 1:55Stay here a little longer.
- 2:04A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 2:15Small efforts are the whole method.
- 2:25If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
- 2:38Each time your mind hands you the stiff neck from hunching, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
- 2:57You do not have to win against the weight carried in the upper back. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
- 3:16Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
- 3:29Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 3:46Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
- 4:00A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
- 4:11You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 4:24Notice whether you feel any different. If not, that's also normal.
- 4:36Nothing changes for a moment.
