About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for financial stress. A softening session you can do in the office. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this at your desk

  • Feet flat, back supported, screen away from your eyeline
  • You can do this with your eyes open if the office makes closing them awkward
  • Unclench the jaw and drop the shoulders first, before anything else

Nobody needs to know you are doing it. Keep it invisible if that makes it possible.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Notice the temperature of the air on the backs of your hands.
  2. 0:13We are not forcing anything open. We are letting things unclench by a single degree.
  3. 0:27Notice your own pulse somewhere. Wrist, throat, wherever you can find it.
  4. 0:40Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  5. 0:53Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
  6. 1:06Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  7. 1:18There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
  8. 1:36You do not have to like the arithmetic that will not balance to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  9. 1:53Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
  10. 2:09You have been carrying the worry that follows the bills for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  11. 2:30Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  12. 2:42With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
  13. 2:57Come back to the room through your senses, one at a time.
