About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 10 minutes of grounding for self-doubt, before bed. A guided session of about 10 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this before bed

  • Do it in bed or somewhere you can move straight to bed after
  • Lower the light, and do not check anything afterwards
  • If you fall asleep before the end, it worked

Falling asleep mid-session is a success, not a failure to complete it.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight.
  2. 0:14Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
  3. 0:30Let the breath get a little quieter, as if you were trying not to wake someone sleeping nearby.
  4. 0:46Let the last hour go on its own. You can pick it up again afterwards.
  5. 1:00Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
  6. 1:14Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  7. 1:26Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  8. 1:38Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
  9. 1:50Notice your hands again. Check whether they've loosened on their own.
  10. 2:02Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
  11. 2:15You have been carrying the small voice saying you cannot for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  12. 2:36Let the exhale carry a little of the question mark over your ability with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  13. 2:56Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  14. 3:09The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
  15. 3:23I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  16. 3:36Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
  17. 3:48If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  18. 4:03Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
  19. 4:14Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
  20. 4:27Come back to the solid things: weight, temperature, surface. They are always available.
  21. 4:40Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  22. 4:52Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  23. 5:05Let this one be unhurried.
  24. 5:14Feel your belly. Let it be soft instead of held in.
  25. 5:26Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  26. 5:39Let the quiet do its work.
  27. 5:49Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
  28. 6:02Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  29. 6:15Just the breath, still.
  30. 6:24Let the whole of your right foot be heavy.
  31. 6:35Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
  32. 6:48Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
  33. 6:59Nothing about the fear that you are not enough has to be explained or justified in this room.
  34. 7:15Imagine softening the edges of the small voice saying you cannot. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
  35. 7:33Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  36. 7:44There is no correct amount of the question mark over your ability to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
  37. 8:03Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  38. 8:17If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
  39. 8:30A short silence. Let it be empty.
  40. 8:40Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back. That contact is the whole anchor.
  41. 8:54Take the next breath slowly.
  42. 9:03Come back to the room through your senses, one at a time.
  43. 9:16When you stand up, do it slowly. There's no reason to hurry.
  44. 9:29Nothing changes for a moment.
