Focus session for writing: 45 minutes, a stream, if you are doing this instead of scrolling
45 minutes of writing, with a stream and a note on what to do when you drift.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
