Focus session for studying: 90 minutes, café murmur, when the house is busy
90 minutes of studying, with café murmur and a note on what to do when you drift.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your shoulders drop about a centimetre. That is roughly where most of us keep the day. It works with other people in the house. You do not need silence. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
3 When it ends
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
