Focus session for studying: 45 minutes, plain quiet, when you are not in the mood
45 minutes of studying, with plain quiet and a note on what to do when you drift.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Nothing needs to be decided in the next few minutes. Park the decisions. Not being in the mood is a normal starting point. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
3 When it ends
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
