Focus session for studying: 45 minutes, distant thunder, when your attention is scattered

45 minutes of studying, with distant thunder and a note on what to do when you drift.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. Scattered attention is the raw material, not an obstacle. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.

2 While the timer runs

  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.

4What to put on

distant thunder — Low rumbles with long gaps. Suits people who find sudden noises more distracting than constant ones.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
