Focus session for reading: 45 minutes, café murmur, when you are too tired to try hard

45 minutes of reading, with café murmur and a note on what to do when you drift.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice whether you're leaning forward. Most people are, slightly, all day. Too tired to try hard is exactly the right amount of tired for this. No preamble. We start with the body.

1 Before you start

  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.

3 When it ends

  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.

4What to put on

café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
