45-minute focus session for practising an instrument with birds at dawn, when you have woken up too early

45 minutes on practising an instrument — slowly, with the metronome. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice whether you're leaning forward. Most people are, slightly, all day. Waking too early is a specific kind of frustrating. This helps with the frustration. No preamble. We start with the body.

1 Before you start

  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.

2 While the timer runs

  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.

4What to put on

birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
