25-minute admin and email session with a fan or air conditioner and a timer, if you are sceptical about all of this
Sit down, press start, and clear the queue for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
There is nothing to get right here. Nothing is being scored. Scepticism is welcome. You do not have to believe anything for this to work. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
3 When it ends
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
