Focus session for language practice: 45 minutes, forest at dusk, when you are waiting for something

45 minutes of language practice, with forest at dusk and a note on what to do when you drift.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice the temperature of the air on the backs of your hands. Waiting is dead time you can spend on this instead. Straight through, at a normal pace.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.

3 When it ends

  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.

4What to put on

forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
