Focus session for exam revision: 50 minutes, plain quiet, if you are doing this in the middle of the day

50 minutes of exam revision, with plain quiet and a note on what to do when you drift.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too. Midday is an underrated time for this. No preamble. We start with the body.

1 Before you start

  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.

3 When it ends

  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.

4What to put on

plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
