Focus session for data work: 50 minutes, a stream, on a low-energy afternoon
50 minutes of data work, with a stream and a note on what to do when you drift.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
3 When it ends
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
