Deep work timer: 90 minutes of practising an instrument (café murmur), when you have woken up too early
One block of practising an instrument with café murmur underneath. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions. Waking too early is a specific kind of frustrating. This helps with the frustration. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
