Deep work timer: 50 minutes of admin and email (birds at dawn), when you have already had a long week
One block of admin and email with birds at dawn underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Start by hearing the furthest sound you can find. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
3 When it ends
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
