Deep work timer: 25 minutes of language practice (plain quiet), when you are too tired to try hard

One block of language practice with plain quiet underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start. Too tired to try hard is exactly the right amount of tired for this. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
  • Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.

3 When it ends

  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.

4What to put on

plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
