Deep work timer: 25 minutes of applications and forms (café murmur), if you are new to this
One block of applications and forms with café murmur underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing. Nothing here assumes you have done this before. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
