Focus session · applications and forms · 25 min
Deep work timer: 25 minutes of applications and forms (a stream), if you are doing this instead of scrolling
One block of applications and forms with a stream underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
3 When it ends
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try A 45-minute block for coding, with rain on a window, if you are tired of apps, Focus session for drawing: 45 minutes, café murmur, when you are not in the mood or Focus session for thesis writing: 45 minutes, plain quiet, on a day that started badly.
