A 25-minute block for portfolio work, with café murmur, when nothing else has worked today
A single 25-minute block for portfolio work — the last ten percent.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Take a moment to notice the room behind you, without turning around. Nothing else has worked today. That is not a reason to skip this. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 45-minute language practice session with rain on a window and a timer, when you are somewhere unfamiliar, 50-minute exam revision session with rain on a window and a timer, when you are doing this for the first time or 25-minute thesis writing session with white noise and a timer, when you are at home and cannot settle.
