90-minute focus session for practising an instrument with a train carriage, when you have already had a long week

90 minutes on practising an instrument — slowly, with the metronome. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".

2 While the timer runs

  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.

3 When it ends

  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.

4What to put on

a train carriage — Rhythmic, low, and slightly rumbly. Many people find the motion-and-noise combination easier to work to than silence.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
