90-minute focus session for portfolio work with plain quiet, when you only have a few minutes
90 minutes on portfolio work — the last ten percent. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. A few minutes is the whole requirement. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
2 While the timer runs
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
