90-minute focus block for drawing — a fireplace, when you are on your own

A timer, a short prep list, and 90 minutes to fill the page.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no. Being on your own is not required, but it does make this simpler. Straight through, at a normal pace.

1 Before you start

  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.

2 While the timer runs

  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.

3 When it ends

  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
  • Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.

4What to put on

a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
