50-minute problem solving session with birds at dawn and a timer, if you have done this a hundred times
Sit down, press start, and stay with the difficulty for 50 minutes. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Start with the noise that is already in the room. We are not going to try to remove it yet. If you have done this a hundred times, change one small thing tonight. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
2 While the timer runs
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
3 When it ends
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 25-minute focus block for thesis writing — plain quiet, when you have more time than usual, 50-minute brainstorming session with forest at dusk and a timer, when you are somewhere noisy or A 90-minute block for studying, with a fireplace, before something difficult.
